Teeth whitening. What is important to know?

Teeth whitening is probably the most common cosmetic dentistry service among adults. Here are some things to know about professional teeth whitening.

Why does the colour of your teeth darken?

There are many factors that can lead to discoloured teeth, including staining foods (coffee, red wine, blueberries, Coca-Cola, etc.), tobacco, fluoride, the use of antibiotics (tetracycline) during the formative years of the tooth as well as mechanical damage to the teeth, inadequate dental treatment or poor oral hygiene. Even heredity or the ageing process can lead to a darker tooth colour.

Consultation. Is it necessary?

If you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth, the first thing you need to do is consult a dentist. During the examination at the dental clinic, the condition of your mouth and teeth will be evaluated, the reasons for the discolouration will be determined, and the most appropriate whitening method will be selected.

When is teeth whitening not recommended?

  • for people up to 16 years of age;
  • dental tissue damage (caries, enamel erosion, wedge defects);
  • for gum and periodontal disease;
  • during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • during orthodontic treatment (wearing braces);
  • for large fillings, crowns;
  • in case of allergy to bleaching agents.

Is whitening bad for your teeth?

Studies have shown that teeth whitening is safe under medical supervision and instructions. Whitening can cause tooth sensitivity, but this condition will return to normal after a while.

What are the whitening techniques?

There are two ways to bleach: Home or in the dental office.

Whitening your teeth Home, custom-made dental caps are used. They are filled with a special whitening agent and placed on the teeth. It is best to place the cap with the whitening agent overnight (4-8 hours, depending on the whitening agent), which is recommended for up to 10 nights.

In the dental office Teeth can be whitened with a laser or Zoom system. During the procedure, the gums are protected with a special product, the teeth are coated with a whitening agent and the teeth are exposed to a laser or light beam. The procedure takes 1-1.5 hours.

Which whitening method to choose? If you decide to lighten your teeth, you should first contact your dentist to discuss all the options available. Your dentist will advise you on the most suitable teeth whitening method for you.
