Professional oral hygiene

Professional oral hygiene - Hygienic procedures that remove mineralised and non-mineralised plaque, polish tooth and filling surfaces, apply therapeutic agents (fluoride), educate patients on personal oral hygiene, and determine the individual effectiveness of the cleaning.

A brief word about plaque.

Soft plaque easy to clean with personal oral hygiene products - toothbrush, toothpaste, interdental floss, mouthwash. If soft plaque is not cleaned, mineralisation starts after 1 to 3 days and within 10 to 20 days, soft plaque turns into hard plaque. dental calculus. Tartar is most likely to form where the salivary ducts open, i.e. on the lingual surfaces of the lower front teeth, on the upper molars, and when there is a crooked tooth position or tooth crowding.

What are the problems caused by not cleaning plaque in time?

Not cleaning plaque starts gingivitiswhich is characterised by swollen, red and bleeding gums. If left untreated, the inflammation can develop into periodontitis, which is the disintegration of the bone and the ligaments that support the tooth. It is therefore necessary to remove the plaque that has formed. The procedure is carried out in a dental clinic by a dentist or oral hygienist.

How is professional oral hygiene performed?

Soft plaque are removed with rotating rubber heads and brushes using a special paste.
Hard plaque (tartar) is removed from the tooth surface using an ultrasonic device and special hand instruments. Once the tartar has been removed, the teeth are polished.
Pigmentary plaque (caused by smoking, coffee tea and other colouring agents) are removed by special sandblasting. The water, soda and air particles pushed out of the sandblast at high speed easily clean even the hardest to reach areas.
If there are aesthetically restored teeth, they need to be polished (to refresh the surface gloss).
Procedure lasts 60-90 minutes. If there is a lot of hard and soft plaque build-up, the oral cleaning can be done in several passes.

Why have a professional oral hygiene procedure?

After a professional oral hygiene treatment, you will feel a sense of cleanliness in your mouth. Your breath will smell fresh. Regular visits to an oral hygienist reduce the risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

What should I know after a professional oral hygiene treatment?

After an oral hygiene procedure:

  • your gums may be irritated and bleed for several days;
  • teeth may be more sensitive to thermal stimuli;
  • spicy and hard foods should be avoided after the procedure;
  • Brush your teeth with a soft brush, use interdental floss;
  • To help your gums heal faster, it is recommended that you rinse your mouth with prophylactic rinses, and use therapeutic rinses only after a specialist has prescribed them;
  • gums return to normal after two weeks.

How often should I have professional oral hygiene?

This depends on the quality of personal oral hygiene, the intensity of tartar accumulation, and the conditions under which plaque is retained.
Subject to these conditions, the procedure may be carried out 1-3 times a year (If tartar is not a problem, once a year is enough, but if you have periodontal problems, you should visit every 3-4 months).

Why do my gums bleed?

Reasons may include:

  • Dental origin: if you bleed only when brushing your teeth, your toothbrush may be too hard or your brushing movements may be irregular (causing damage to the gums). Bleeding can also be caused by poor-quality fillings, hanging edges, or dentures that are not in order. It can also be caused by plaque build-up on the teeth;
  • non-dental origin: gums can bleed when vitamins are deficient, the body's immune system is weakened, there are blood and liver diseases, diabetes, etc.
